India

An ancient civilisation, influenced by diverse and distant cultures, India has a rich and complex heritage. This is reflected in numerous outstanding monuments spread across the country, exuberant festivals and a distinctive yet varied cuisine

Huge and exceptionally diverse, India is impossible to cover in a single trip. Some tour suggestions, to take you around some of the country’s most spectacular and fascinating locations include:

  • The Golden Triangle – starting at the capital of India – Delhi – this is a classic trip via Agra and the Taj Mahal to the Rajastani planned city of Jaipur and the immense Amber fort.
  • Rajastan – one of India’s greatest destinations full of palaces forts and temples. Of the many places to explore, some of the finest are: Udaipur, Mount Abu, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer.
  • The Malabar coast – a trip through beautiful Kerala, taking in Thiruvananthapuram and its nearby beaches, via the backwaters, to the port of Kochi

Chris’s comments

On my recent visit to India with TransIndus, I experienced fantastic hotels many of them former Royal Palaces or located withUmaid Bhawan Palace hotel, Jodhpur exceptional views of the Taj Mahal, for example. The welcome and care we received on our trip was incredible with knowledgeable guides, road travel was either by air conditioned coach or private car. Tours were arranged on a small scale so I did not feel herded around in a big group – something I would recommend to clients. My personal highlights were a night in Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, perched high above the desert capital, it is the last of the great palaces of India and one of the largest residences in the world. Set amidst 26 acres of lush garden and has served as the principal residence of the Jodhpur Royal Family. The ambience of this hotel combined with its superb location and lavish interiors transported me back into days of the Raj.

When to go?

With clear sunny days and mild to cold nights, October to March is generally the best time to visit India. The monsoon rains break in coastal Kerala in May or June and travel inland to Delhi by July, lasting till early September. May and June are extremely hot except in the hills. The coastal and mountain areas get more rain than the central plains.
